The phrase “With a whistle, we have left Shimbashi station” is the first line of Songs of the Railway published in 1900, and is used as the melody marking a train’s departure at Shinagawa Station, among other uses. The opening of the railway between Shimbashi and Yokohama was a turning point in the history of transportation in Japan. Later on, a railway network was established all over Japan, and the opening of Tokyo Station in 1914 meant that Tokyo Station became the new terminal, but Shimbashi is still talked of as the origin of the railway.
