The industrial revolution that supported Japan’s modernization began with the introduction of Western advanced technology. The Akabane Engineering Works of the Ministry of Engineering were established in the Minato City area in 1871, foreign technology was introduced and various types of machinery were manufactured. In the areas of agriculture and fisheries, too, research facilities were set up,
with the Government Farm and Fishery Training Institute located in the Minato City area. Private sector-led works too such as the Tanaka Engineering Works (later to become Toshiba) and Tokyo Gas Company were also built.
