Along with Tokyo Sayama tea, cyclamens are a regional specialty of Mizuho. The town boasts the highest production volume in Tokyo, and numerous greenhouses line Iwakura Kaido road, which is nicknamed "Cyclamen Avenue." The flowers are sold directly from greenhouses from early November until they bloom in December, and many people visit the area. |
また、町では約100年も前からだるま作りが行われてきました。「東京だるま」、「多摩だるま」と呼ばれて親しまれ、現在も「だるま職人」がその技術を伝承し続けています。もともと、だるま作りは農家の副業で、冬の農閑期にこつこつと手作業で作られたものです。今もひとつひとつ手作りで、顔や形に個性があります。近年では「だるま抱き猫」やさまざまな色彩のだるまが登場し、人気を呼んでいます。 |
Daruma dolls have been made in the town for around a century. They are known by the brand names Tokyo Daruma and Tama Daruma, and daruma craftsmen continue to pass along the expertise for making them. Daruma manufacturing was originally a side job for farmers, who laboriously fashioned them by hand during the winter off-season. They are still individually hand-made today, and each has a distinctive face and shape. Figures of cats holding daruma dolls and daruma dolls in a variety of colors have appeared in recent years and become popular. |
