| In 1939, when World War II broke out in Europe, Japan also declared war against the United States in 1941, and entered into the Pacific War. Mizuho was placed under the wartime regime also, and many military facilities were built in the town. In the dry-field farming areas south of Ishihata and Tonogaya districts, Tama Airfield was built in 1940, and test flights were carried out for the Imperial Army's state-of-the-art aircraft and prototypes. In 1941, the army's shooting range was built in Sayama valley of the Ishihata district, and military shooting practice was carried out. All these facilities were built on blocks of land which had been requisitioned on a semi-compulsory basis "for the sake of the country". |
| During wartime, although Mizuho town escaped large-scale bombing damage, its townspeople had to endure austerity. Towards the end of the war, the government decided to evacuate school children. In 1944, Mizuho was specified as a destination site for evacuees, and the town accepted the children from the Jonan Second Elementary School of Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo. |
