| 箱根ケ崎南駐在所のところで日光街道から分れて東に進む道(この角で旅籠・荷問屋の関屋が営業していた。)殿ケ谷の一本榎の前、村山のお伊勢の森の前を通り、東大和庚申塚、九道の辻を経て、田無の橋場で大江戸街道に合流する。人家に近く、残堀川等に沿った道であったので御嶽道者など旅人はこの道を利用した。この道の沿道には、石畑(いしはた)の二本榎、殿ケ谷、残堀の一本榎、村山中藤の三本榎等植えられているのが特色で榎どうという地名になっているところもある。榎は大抵辻の北東の方に塚を築き植えられていた。 | This highway proceeds eastward after separating from Nikko Kaido at the Hakonegasaki south police substation (where Seki-ya was running an inn and general goods wholesaler at this corner). It continues onward, bypassing the front of Ippon-enoki (a single hackberry [Celtis sinensis] tree) of Tonogaya, and through Oise-no-mori (Oise's forest) of Murayama, Koshin-zuka of Higasih Yamato and Kudo-no-tsuji, and eventually reaches Tanashi-no-hashiba (the bridge site at Tanashi) where it merges into Oedo Kaido. Because the road ran close to the houses, along the Zanbori River, etc., travelers such as the Mitake-doja used this road. It was characteristic of the area that enoki trees were planted along the side of this road, and some places were named with suffix-enoki, e.g., Nihon-enoki (two hackberry trees) of Ishihata, Ippon-enoki of Tonogaya and Zanbori, and Sanbon-enoki (three hackberry trees) of Murayama Nakato. Mostly, enoki had been planted on a mound on the northeast side of the crossroads. |
