伝えられる縁起によると、親鸞上人が当地を訪れた際に、形見として残したものとある。しかし、上総地方へ来訪したことは確認されず、現在は長柄町及びその周辺に真宗寺院が無い。ただし、有力な弟子の一人である性信が、茂原市に寺院を建てたという記載があり、あるいは関連がうかがわれる。

The historical record which came with the picture tells that Shinran-shounin left this as a memento when he visited the place. However, it is not confirmed that he ever visited Kazusa region (central part of Chiba). There is no Joudo Shinshuu Sect's temple in Nagara-machi and its vicinity. Shoushin, one of the influential disciples of Shinran, is recorded to have built a temple in Mobara, and this may be related.
