          "菊池氏初代の則隆が築造したと言われている居館「菊之城跡」の近くに、赤星舟着場跡がある。この居館は本拠地が隈府の守山城に移るまでは、菊池氏の拠点として機能していたと考えられる。  　居館の立地場所が菊池川に面しており、舟運が当時の交通手段としては最も有効なものであった。江戸時代に描かれた「菊池川全図」に赤星舟着場が書き込まれていることから、重要な港として機能していたと考えられる。中世まで遡って、居館と河川の港が一つの組み合わさった施設として機能していたことが想定できる。この舟運を活かして、宋・明との間で交易を盛んに行うことが菊池氏の富の根源であろう。無官の菊池武房が虎の尾の尻鞘を身に着けた姿で「蒙古襲来絵詞」に描かれている。虎の尾は入手困難であり、高位者だけに許されるものを、着用できた背景には菊池氏の経済力の高さが存在する。  　さらに、中国が盛んに輸入したものに、日本の木材がある。菊池川の上流域には現在でも国有林があり、豊富な木材の生産地である。菊池一族が山の木材を管理し、輸出用の木材を生産し、交易で財政を支えていたと推定できる。昭和初期まで、木材を筏に組んで、下流域の玉名まで運搬していた菊池市七城町の高島舟着場の存在から、中世でも筏流しは行われていたと考えられ、赤星舟着場もその役割の一翼を担っていたと考えられる。"
