          "年の初めに藁や竹で作った馬を各戸に配るという行事。戦後しばらくの間まで、耕運機やトラクターが普及するまでは田畑を耕すために牛馬が使われており、牛馬の一年間の労をねぎらい、また無事息災を願っておこなわれる行事であるとされている。中片地区では300年ほど前から行われてきたと伝わっている。  　少し前までは熊本県内で散見された行事だったが、耕運機やトラクターの普及と共に牛馬もいなくなり、この行事も姿を消しつつある。現在は菊池市の前川地区(七城)、虎口地区、中片地区(菊池)に伝わっている。  　いずれの地域のものも行事としての意味合いは同じだが、馬のつくりなど、それぞれに特徴がある。例えば虎口や中片では足に竹を使うが、前川では足まで藁で作ってあったり、馬に松竹梅を添えて配るなどの特徴がある。また、中片ではこの行事のことを「初馬売り」と呼んでいる。  　基本的に子どもが作り手であったが、近年は少子化のため大人が作っている。"
