          "『肥後国誌』に南福寺のことが「台宗ノ古跡ト云ヘトモ開基不分明」と記されている。この寺はもと天台宗の寺で15代武光が菊池五山の一つとして復興させたといわれている。その本尊がこの坐像である。  　像は高さ83cm、桂の寄木造りの坐像である。右手は衆生の畏れを去らせる施無畏印(せむいん)で、左手は薬壷を持ち膝上に置く衆生の願望するものを与える与願印の手や指の組み方、印相をしている。そして、如来は悟りを開いて仏になった覚者の超人間にふさわしく、頭部の肉が隆起した肉髻と衲衣以外は全く身に着けていない。  　薬師如来像の代表的なものは奈良県の薬師寺金堂にあるブロンズ像であるが、この像も薬師像の特徴をもつ。室町末期の作と伝えられるが、村の秘仏として厨子の中にしっかり保存されてきたため、460年経った今もほとんど虫害もなく、彩色や墨書銘をみてとることができる。"
