          "赤星やんぼし塚は、菊池川の左岸赤星集落の南端を走る河岸段丘(3m)の上に位置する。この古墳は西に隣接する納骨堂の工事中に、巨石構築の横穴石室が発見され、発見時には上蓋石(天井石)の移動はあったものの石室の構造はほぼ完全な形で当時の様子を窺(うかが)うことができる。内部の遺物は盗掘のため須恵器と轡(くつわ)の破片のみであったが、以前に馬具類が出土したと伝えられる。  　この古墳は羨門を西に向け、前室と玄室があり、羨門及び玄室の塞戸(ふさぎど)に家型石棺の棺蓋が使用され、奥の屍床には箱式石棺の棺材が使われている。また、玄室の屍床には朱が塗られている。  　古墳そのものは小規模の円墳であるが、形が整い横穴石室の完成期のものとみられる。本古墳の西方に天祗、銭塚古墳などがあり、近くに天祗、福土、水溜遺跡などの古代集落跡も発見されている。"
