          "聖護寺の本堂内に薬師如来の立像が安置されている。銅鋳造で黒く輝く仏身には重量感があり、目を伏せた物静かな表情には荘厳な面持ちさえ感じる。  　仏身の背後には如来像の由来について刻銘されている。これによると豪潮(ごうちょう)という人が玉名の繁根木神社の護神寺である寿福寺に住んでいた時、その本尊として京都の仏師に薬師如来の鋳造を依頼し、寛政9年(1797)に完成したものであると記されている。  　豪潮は全国に宝篋印塔を建て、諸寺に観音像を納めた名僧といわれるが、寿福寺はすでに衰滅している。その本尊が復興した菊池の聖護寺に安置されていることは感慨深いものがある。相貌は面長で抑揚に乏しいが、江戸期の特徴をよく表していて全体的にまとまった感じで美しい。江戸後期の制作として優れた作品といえる。"
