          "ここは、迫間川と木野川に挟まれた台(うてな)台地西端の阿蘇溶結凝灰岩の崖面に開口している。横穴は、「瀬戸口百穴」と呼ばれ、水島集落の北側から山鹿市菊鹿町境の豊水まで約1．3ｋmにわたって分布している。  　この土質は崩れやすく、400基以上あったといわれていたが、専門家の調査では252基程度という。現存する横穴群の中で、数の多いことでは有名である。  　6世紀中葉から7世紀頃のもので、この中の2基からは多数の亀甲が発見され、古代の亀卜(きぼく)との関連から注目されている。  　多くは複室、全面丹塗りで「コ」の字型の屍床(ししょう)を持ち、天井部は切妻・寄棟、丸天井となっている。  　県道熊本菊鹿線の改良に伴い発掘調査が実施され、主な出土品は人骨、高坏、椀、金銀環、鉄鏃(てつぞく)、刀子、鉄斧、貝輪、玉類、耳環、馬具等である。副葬品や土師器、須恵器が出土している。"
