          "鉄道も自動車もなく道も狭かった昔、菊池川の舟運は菊池地方経済の大動脈であった。中世の頃は菊池一族も川を利用して大陸の国々と交易し、舟着場は人馬で賑わい物産の集散地として繁盛した。  　高島舟着場は大正初期まで銀行の支店や白壁の倉庫、二階建ての旅館や食堂が建ち並び、米・木材・大豆・菜種等が積み出され、塩や海産物・石灰・茶碗等が陸揚げされた。  　舟は船底の平らな帆舟(9×1.8m)で米40俵を積んだ。肥後藩から大阪米市場に送られ米40万俵の半分は高瀬港(玉名市)から積み出されたという。木材は昭和初期まで筏に組み高瀬まで運んでいた。  　大正2年菊池軌道が開通し道路も改良されると、舟運は利用されなくなっていった。現在、川と家並みは高い堤防で遮られ、舟つなぎの大榎は河川改修により伐採され、復元された小規模な「俵転がし」にのみ往時を偲ぶことができる。"
