"中世に樺山氏が築いたといわれ、天文年間（1532～1554）頃に伊東氏の手にわたりました。その後、天文3年（1534）に北郷氏領となり、北郷氏が祁答院へ移った時は伊集院忠棟領となっています。庄内十二外城の一つとして、庄内の乱のときには伊集院氏の砦の一つでしたが北郷氏に攻められ落城しました。その後再び北郷氏のものとなりましたが、元和元年（1615）の一国一城令によって廃城となりました。"
