          "&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;總持寺紫雲台にある障壁画の一つである。紫雲台は大正四年（一九一五）に建てられた總持寺の住持の表方丈の間で、宗門の僧侶、全国の檀信徒と親しく相見する大書院で、国の登録有形文化財に登録されている。各室の襖や板戸は、当代屈指の日本画家、佐久間鉄園や津端道彦などの筆を持って飾られており、佐藤紫煙も板戸を担当した。<br>　紫煙は岩手県一関市出身の日本画家で、明治時代半ばから昭和十年代にかけて東京で活躍した。滝和亭、衣笠豪谷らに師事し、特に南宗北宗を総合した花鳥画で名を馳せていた和亭から多大な影響を受けた。伝統的な日本画の描き方が特徴で、主に花鳥画を得意とし、特に鶏や鶴、孔雀、牡丹といった題材は特に卓越した筆捌きだったといわれている。<br>　本図は紫煙が得意とする鶴之図であるが、鶴と瑞雲のみで構成された控えめな作品である。しかし、確かな写実性を持って描かれた鶴は、少ない色使いにも関わらず、繊細な美しさを持ち、大きな杉戸に負けない存在感を放ちつつも、落ち着いた品のあるものとなっている。總持寺住持の表方丈の間の一つを飾る杉戸として、画家の個性を主張し過ぎず、慎ましく、その場に馴染むようにある姿は、賓客をもてなす場にふさわしい作品といえる。"
