This photo shows the busy Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street (around 1973).
Houses began to be built from the end of the Meiji period, when the railroad was first opened. With the development of spinning mills, many stores also started to open in the Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street as well as in the Ikenocho Municipal Market. By the beginning of the Showa period, the Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street became very lively and filled with various stores and bustling crowds. In 1955, the first shopping arcade in Yamato Takada City was built.
There are so many people! The arcade looks beautiful!

The Takada Theater(Movie theater)

There were also movie theaters. One of them was the Takada Theater in the Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street (around 1955). The Takada Theater was called “Daikokuza” when it first opened around 1897. In the Taisho period, the theater was renamed the “Takada Theater.” After that, the theater was closed and transformed into Nakatani supermarket (opened in 1968) and Nichii (moved to Katashio Cho in 1976). It is now the fresh market.

We interviewed Mr. Sasaoka, the owner of the hardware store named “Sasaoka” on the shopping street.

Interview with the store owner Kenji Sasaoka (58)
“When I was a child, there were no large stores like today, but shopping streets had many stores selling daily necessities. Not only people living in the city but also those in the countryside and in Yoshino came to Yamato Takada for shopping.
In Yamato Takada City, there were 11 shopping streets in the past (40 to 50 years ago) but there are only four to five shopping streets remaining today.
There were 50 stores in the Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street at its peak but there are 30 stores today (as of 2016). Store owners are getting older. Their average age is 70. ”
