万歳平城は、現在の大和高田市池田、市立高田西中学校北側にある通称「名倉北池(なくらきたいけ)」の一帯にありました。大和武士として活躍した万歳氏一族の城館で、二重の堀で囲まれた城郭をもち、城下には市場が開かれ、それが、現在の地名(大和高田市大字市場)につながったようです。
万歳氏はこのほか、葛城市当麻(たいま)の当麻寺西方1、2kmの地で、二上山の尾根上にある万歳山(まんざいさん)(標高380～260m)に、万歳山城をもっていました。
万歳平城からは、14世紀半ばごろの土師器の小皿と中皿が発見されていて、城が築かれたのは、室町時代はじめごろまでさかのぼることが明らかになりました。城は天正8(1580)年の織田信長による一国一城令によって破壊されたとされています。

古墳時代から平安時代までつかわれた素焼きの土器。１０世紀以後はかんたんな窯で焼くようになった。

一つの国には一つしかお城をたててはいけないという命令。
Manzai Hira Castle
The castle was located in the area called “Nakurakitaike Pond,” to the north of present-day Ikeda of Yamato Takada City and Takadanishi Junior High School. The castle was owned by the Manzai clan, who acted as Yamato samurai. The castle was surrounded by double moats and had a market held nearby, which may have led to the present-day name of the place (Yamato Takada City Oaza Ichiba)．
In addition to the castle, Manzai also owned the Manzai Yama Castle, which was located on Mount Manzai (altitude of 380–260 m) in the Mount Nijo mountain ridge, which was one to two kilometers west of Taimadera Temple in Katsuragi City Taima．
Small and medium Haji pottery plates from around the middle of the 14th century were found in Manzai Hira Castle, confirming that the castle was built at least as early as the beginning of the Muromachi period. The castle was reportedly destroyed by the Ikkoku Ichijo Rei (Law of One Castle per Province) imposed by Nobunari Oda in 1580．
NoteWhat is “Haji pottery”?
Haji pottery is unglazed pottery used from the Kofun period to the Heian period. After the 10th century, potters began to use simple kilns to fire pottery.
What is Ikkoku Ichijo Rei?
Ikkoku Ichijo Rei was an order permitting only one castle per province.
