Description The Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation foundation was established to convey the facts about the bombing to the public and contribute to promote peace and international understanding and cooperation with the overall goal being to "contribute to world peace and human happiness." Established in 1967 as a bureau of the City of Hiroshima, it became a foundation in 1976 and a public interest incorporated foundation in 2011. The Mayor of Hiroshima serves as the president and a chairperson is appointed.
The Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation is responsible for many of Hiroshima City’s peace and international exchange programs. It manages and operates the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, International Conference Center Hiroshima, and Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims, as well as being the secretariat of the Mayor’s for Peace. Public interest projects of the foundation include providing lectures on the A-bomb experience to students on school excursions given by A-bomb survivors, and by family members and others to whom A-bomb experiences were passed on (A-bomb Legacy Successors and Hibakusha Family Member Legacy Successors), peace education courses, and the creation of peace education materials for students on school excursions and others. The foundation carries out a wide range of further activities in collaboration with domestic and international peace research institutions and related organizations. It is also responsible for international peace promotion projects such as A-bomb exhibitions held overseas, international exchange and cooperation projects such as the International Festival held every November, internationalization projects such as consultation services for foreign residents, as well as the Hiroshima Scholarship Program.
You can read about the foundation’s activities in its bulletin Peace Culture (available in Japanese and English) and in its annual business report Peace and Exchange. Both can be downloaded from the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation website to learn more about the foundation’s specific projects.
