Description A model of the heavy cruiser Tone of the Imperial Japanese Navy is on display, as well as the crew’s clothing and equipment. The Tone was bombed by U.S. forces at Etajima Bay and was badly damaged. In the nearby Tone Park there is a cenotaph for the dead of the warship, which bears the names of local residents in addition to those related to the warship. The crew members of a U.S. Navy SB2C carrier-based bomber, shot down by the Tone on July 28, 1945, were taken to the city of Hiroshima as prisoners of war (POWs) and also died in the atomic bombing. It is said that the surviving Tone crew members assisted in the relief efforts for A-bomb survivors who had been brought to Noumishima Island.
