In July 1989, 300 junior high school students from Hiroshima gathered in front of the "Children’s Peace Monument" to commemorate Sadako Sasaki and other children who were victims of the atomic bombing and held a service in front of the monument for the first time since it was erected. One thousand paper cranes folded by elementary school children in Michigan, U.S.A., were also offered. Since, Noboricho Junior High School, where Sadako was supposed to have attended, has hosted an annual memorial service in front of the Children’s Peace Monument where students from elementary and junior high schools all across the city hold a silent prayer for the victims of the atomic bombing offering paper cranes, making appeals for peace, and singing songs to express their wishes for peace.
A bell modeled on an ancient bronze bell and a gold-plated crane initially hung in the tower of the Children’s Peace Monument; to prevent theft these were removed to be displayed at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. They are temporarily put back for the memorial ceremonies in July and on August 6. In 2003, duplicates of each were made and hung to restore the monument to its original appearance.
The service in front of the Children’s Peace Monument was canceled and held on the grounds of Noboricho Junior High School in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic. In July 2023, all students of Noboricho Junior High School participated in the resumption of the memorial service in front of the Children’s Peace Monument, and in July 2024 a monument memorial service was held at the International Conference Center Hiroshima with the participation of approximately 360 students from elementary and junior high schools in Hiroshima City.
