Description
|
The Hiroshima Red Cross Hospital, which stood 1.5 kilometers from the hypocenter, provided aid even though 51 of its hospital staff and nursing students were killed by the bombing and 250 others seriously injured. Fumio Shigeto, a physician at the hospital communicated the facts of radiation damage to the world resulting in "A-bomb disease" becoming widely known. In 1956, the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Survivors Hospital, the world’s first hospital specializing in medical care for A-bomb survivors, was also established and since 1988 the combined Hiroshima Red Cross and Atomic Bomb Survivors Hospital has been playing a central role in A-bomb survivor care to this day. The memorial service is held at the Memorial Park which preserves and exhibits a portion of the building from the time of the bombing that still retains its iron window frames warped by the blast. A moment of silence is observed for the staff members who died in the atomic bombing and those who were killed in the war and flowers are offered in their memory.
