Description
|
This exhibition hall preserves and exhibits the actual Daigo Fukuryu Maru, a fishing boat that was exposed to radiation from the 1954 U.S. hydrogen bomb test (Bravo) at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands, as well as materials related to hydrogen bomb testing at Bikini Atoll. Focusing on the exposure of the Daigo Fukuryu Maru and the death of Aikichi Kuboyama, who was one of the crew members, the exhibit tells the full story of the Bikini Incident in which other fishing boats were also exposed to radiation. In addition to the hull, the ship’s radio telegraph transmitter and Geiger counter are on display and visitors can learn about the history of the efforts to preserve the Daigo Fukuryu Maru and the campaign against atomic and hydrogen bombs. The exhibition hall also focuses on the radioactive contamination in the Pacific Ocean, including of the Marshall Islands, and the damage caused by nuclear weapons, nuclear development, and nuclear testing around the world, including Hiroshima and Nagasaki, from a "Global Hibakusha" perspective.
