In the beginning of the first half, Japan's stand-off Ono, as the key player for attacking, sought a gap in Tonga's defense, while throwing number 8 Tui and centre Nicholas vertically, however, Japan was not able to go forward successfully, being prevented by double tackles from physically stronger Tonga. Japan also had difficulty getting the ball out of the breakdown, and was not able to start attacking as the forwards' attacks which tended to have many throwballs, were received by tackles and intercepts by Tonga's defense, who were quick starters. Yet Japan's tempo to get the ball out went up little by little with their aggressiveness and persistence for this match, and the ball started moving around in space where Tonga's defense was sparse. In the 13th minute when the ball started moving around to Japan's rhythm, Japan got a lineout in front of Tonga's goal and push in a maul, then Hendrik Tui scored a try. Even while the maul was about to collapse with strong resistance by Tonga's forwards, Japan's forwards scored a try, shifting the ball position steadily (7-3). But just after it, in the 15th minute, scrum-half Taniela Moa ran through the space from “8 and 9” at a scrum in front of Japan's goal, and the ball was passed to blind wing Alaska Taufa who ran into the inside of the stand-off from the blindside over the back of a tackle, then he scored a try (7-10). Also in the proceeding 24th minute, scrum-half Moa ran through an open space and scored a try by a combination play with hooker Ma'asi who was waiting on the edge of the touchline (10-17).
In the second half of the match, Japan switched their mood. They raised their tempo in short-side attacks by their forwards, and number 8 Tui, who had remained at the backs line, cut into the inside at top speed to get a big gain. Full-back Goromaru attempted to score the penalty goal from it, however the ball hit the post. Yet Goromaru was not able to give up. He picked the ball up by himself, broke through the opposing defense, and scored a try (17-17). The tempo of Japan, who clung to their win, went up quickly from this point. They clung to quick take-outs of the ball at breakdowns, and decisions and movements by the second player that they had sought started working. Their attacks got better, then their defense started moving forward, and they got the ball from Tonga who lost space and played desperately. However, in the 21st minute of the second half, stand-off Ono failed to make a gain in consecutive attacks and chose to kick, then the backs movement stopped. Tonga carried the ball easily through the outer space of Japan with no chase, and scored a try (17-24). While “Nippon!” calls were echoing in Chichibunomiya, during the last ten minutes, Japan substituted in Senba as the centre, Tatekawa as the stand-off, and attempted to collapse Tonga's defense which was smaller by one player. However, they made mistakes at important moments. Tonga spent time at the short side and won (20-24). It was a bitter loss for head coach Jones, who had a plan to win as well as for the audience at the stand. Even while Japan had been strengthening in a short period of time from April, this match showed that the players still had shortcomings. (Yasuhiko Terunuma)
