Attended the meeting of the Education Society. Papers and addresses on the aim of a Christian school in China. Very interesting and good. I was invited by Mr. and Mrs. Fitch to dinner and dined with Dr. Sheffield and Mateer.
In the afternoon I read my paper on the government education in Japan. It was listened[to] with marked attention and well received.
Dr. Sheffield showed his Chinese typewriter or printing wheel. Very ingenious piece of invention. It has 4,000 characters. In the evening there was a public meeting presided [over] by English consul Mr. Bowne. Drs. Sheffield, Allen and Mateer made very good speeches. Dr. Mateer is a “levell-headed”[sic] man.
