The box has the inscription of “Self-inscribed The Hundred Poets By To Yashu.” To no Tsuneyori (ca.1401-1484) was a descendent of the Taira clan, and his forefather was To no Taneyori (son of Chiba Tsunetane), who became lord of the Kazusa-nokuni Katori-gori To-no-sho domain, and adopted the surname of To. Shigetane, second head of the To clan, served Minamoto no Sanetomo, studied waka poetry under Teika, and after him the clan successively achieved renown as poets of the military class. In 1449 (Buʼan 6), Tsuneyori visited Shotetsu, and in the next year (Hotoku 2) became a pupil of Gyoko. In 1471 (Bunmei 3), he taught the Kokinshu poetry collection to Sogi, and is regarded as the founder of its transmission. Around 1473 (Bunmei 5), he became lord of Shimotsuke, and adopted the name To Yashu. He is the author of To Yashu Kikigaki and Shinkokinshu Kikigaki.
