Description The building is also commonly known as the Atomic Bomb Museum. The Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation manages and operates the museum as the designated management entity, and the museum exhibits and preserves artifacts and other materials related to the damages inflicted by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. It has been visited by numerous students on school excursions and foreign tourists, and since the 1980s (excluding the period affected by the COVID pandemic), it has been the most visited tourist site in Hiroshima City, with more than one million visitors per year.
Opened in 1955, the museum was built with government subsidies as a "facility to commemorate lasting peace" under the Hiroshima Peace Memorial City Construction Law. The first director of the museum was Shogo Nagaoka who had collected A-bomb-related materials together with citizen volunteers. After two major renovations, the adjacent Hiroshima Peace Memorial Hall was converted into the East Building of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum in 1994, followed by the reopening of the East Building in 2017 and the Main Building in 2019. In 2006, the Main Building, a reinforced concrete structure designed by Kenzo Tange, became the first postwar building to be designated as a National Important Cultural Property.
The Main Building primarily displays photographs and documents showing the devastation of the atomic bombing and artifacts left behind by A-bomb survivors, and the East Building presents exhibits on the dangers of nuclear weapons and the history of Hiroshima before and after the bombing. After the renovation, the exhibition structure was changed to focus more on the specific history of each of the artifacts.
The main collection includes approximately 22,000 A-bomb-related materials, 70,000 photographs, and 5,000 paintings of the atomic bombing (as of 2024); a library with related books and magazines is also attached to the museum. The museum is responsible for collecting, preserving, and organizing materials related to the atomic bombing. The museum features lectures on the A-bomb experience given by A-bomb survivors, and by family members and others to whom A-bomb experiences were passed on (A-bomb Legacy Successors and Hibakusha Family Member Legacy Successors). The museum produces videos of the testimonies of A-bomb survivors, lends photographic posters and video materials to domestic and international organizations, as well as providing an overview of the permanent collection on the internet and a "Peace Database" that allows you to search the collection. Additionally, the museum develops a variety of activities to serve as a base in Japan for communicating information about the damages caused by the atomic bombing, and for peace education.
