Description
|
Before the atomic bombing the area around Peace Memorial Park was lined with shops and private homes where people were engaged in their daily activities in a bustling atmosphere. The exhibition displays the remains of these streetscapes, including gutters and asphalt from the former Tenjin-machi Street found 60 to 90 centimeters underground in the park during excavation and rows of stones marking the boundaries between neighboring houses. When remnants of the atomic bombing were unearthed during excavations for the seismic retrofitting of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum the city of Hiroshima decided to open the remnants to the public at another location in the park in response to public demand for the display of these remnants. The facility opened in 2022. In addition to experts, A-bomb survivors’ groups and citizens’ groups seeking use of the remnants participated in the discussion group that reviewed exhibit preparations. Additionally, the Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims displays cross-sectional samples of strata collected during the construction of the facility.
