Description
|
Located 170 meters from the hypocenter, it is the only building exposed to the atomic bombing that retains the vestiges of the former Nakajima district. It was newly built in 1929 as Taishoya Kimono Shop with its head office in Osaka. The modern, reinforced concrete structure of the kimono shop made it a novel building at the time. Due to the intensification of the war and tighter economic controls the kimono shop closed in 1943, and the following year it was purchased by the Hiroshima Prefectural Fuel Distribution Control Association and turned it into a fuel hall. Although the interior of the building was completely incinerated by the atomic bomb (except for the basement) the exterior of the building remained intact due to its reinforced concrete construction (which provided it with earthquake resistance) and the fact that there were no openings on the side facing the hypocenter, resulting in the outer walls of the building remaining intact.
After the war the building was repaired and continued to be used as a fuel hall before being acquired by Hiroshima City in 1957 and turned into a base for reconstruction as the Eastern Reconstruction Office. Rebuilt in 1982 as the Peace Memorial Park Rest House it became a tourist information center and rest area for the city of Hiroshima, reopening in 2020 after undergoing a series of renovations. It serves as a starting point to connect visitors to the Peace Memorial Park with activities related to history, regional development, and tourism.
In addition to the tourist information center there is a store and café selling local goods, a permanent exhibition space with a diorama of the old Nakajima district and panel displays, as well as peace tours and workshops. Parts of the collapsed roof and beams damaged by the blast, as well as the basement, have been preserved and are open to the public. In the basement visitors can see remnants of the atomic bombing presented alongside the account of the late Eizo Nomura, who survived the atomic bombing while in this basement.
