Description
|
In 1589, Terumoto Mori began construction of what would become Hiroshima castle. The Mori, Fukushima, and Asano clans were the castle lords. It is also called Rijo meaning "carp castle." It was the center of Hiroshima as a military capital, the Fifth Division was stationed within Hiroshima Castle during the Meiji era. After the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War in 1894 the Imperial General Headquarters were moved to the inner keep of Hiroshima Castle and Emperor Meiji visited Hiroshima. In that same year an extraordinary session of the 7th Imperial Diet was held in a provisional Diet building on the outer walls of the old Hiroshima Castle, making Hiroshima the temporary capital of Japan. In 1945 the castle served as the Chugoku Regional Military Headquarters.
The atomic bombing of Hiroshima Castle on August 6, 1945, destroyed the military facilities that had stood alongside the castle, and the castle tower and other castle buildings that remained in the inner and outer keep areas collapsed or were destroyed by fire. The first report of the damage caused by the atomic bomb was transmitted from the Air Defense Operations Office of the Chugoku Regional Military Headquarters, which had been established in the inner keep. The castle tower was rebuilt in 1958 when the Hiroshima Restoration Exposition was held to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the city’s incorporation. Currently, the inner and outer keeps and inner moat are designated as National Historic Sites and the castle tower serves as a museum presenting the history of Hiroshima Castle (to be closed in the latter half of FY2025). Additionally, there are the ruins of the Hiroshima Imperial General Headquarters and the Air Defense Operations Office of the Chugoku Regional Military Headquarters as well as an A-bombed eucalyptus tree and other remnants within the inner keep, allowing visitors to learn about the war and the atomic bombing throughout this expansive historic site.
