Shoninki is a secret book of ninjutsu consisting of three volumes, written by Natori Sanjuro Masazumi in 1681. Natori was a feudal retainer of Kishu Province (present- day Wakayama Prefecture), and summarized the ninjutsu of Kusunoki school. The Shoninki is regarded as one of the three major ninjutsu documents, along with the Bansenshukai and the Shinobihiden. The Shoninki describes various ninjutsu techniques such as Shichihode: the seven basic disguises, Shinobi roku-gu: the essential ninja six-tool set, as well as the espionage strategies and art of sorcery necessary to infiltrate or gather information. The content included in this book is structured in a technique characteristic of Edo -period samurai influences, also incorporating the ideas of Zen Buddhism.
